SELECTIVE ATTENTION

Cherry (1953)

Dichotic Listening Test

Dichotic listening ("Cocktail Party Problem") presents a different spoken message to each ear at the same time. It is used to study selective attention: how we focus on one source of information while filtering out another.

Cherry asked participants to shadow one message by repeating it aloud while ignoring the message in the other ear. They could recall little of the unattended message, although they often noticed basic physical changes in it.

Headphones are essential. Find a quiet place and set a comfortable volume before beginning.
